ASP 2022 Meeting News

By: Charles Criscione (Chair, LOC of ASP in 2022)

Fellow parasitologists, it has been two years since we were last able to see each other in person. I greatly missed the scientific and social interactions that occur during our ASP meetings, and I look forward to seeing everyone once again in person.

Our 97th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Parasitologists will be held July 9-12th in College Station, Texas. We have a great meeting in the works with several events and symposia to look forward to including our traditional ASP Welcome Reception, Student Social, Annual ASP Student Auction, and Poster and Palettes & Parasites Session. The President’s Symposium is titled "Snails in Parasitology: Taxonomy, Biogeography and Host Parasite Interactions" with the awesome speaker lineup of Dr. Jillian Detwiler (University of Manitoba), Dr. Erika Ebbs (Purchase College – State University of New York), and Dr. Ben Hanlet (University of New Mexico). Please see Kayleigh Chalkowski’s write-up for details on the Student’s Symposium titled “Communicating Complexity: integrating art, story and parasitology”. Here, I make special note that some of the speakers will be displaying and selling their artwork at the meeting!

The venue for the 2022 meeting will be at the neighboring Cavalry Court and The George Hotels, which reside in the Century Square market area next door to the Texas A&M University campus. Travel information, links for hotel reservations, and the link to meeting registration can be found at the meeting website link (https://www.bio.tamu.edu/asp-97/). These hotels and the market area provide an ideal setup for scientific and social interactions by providing several eateries, pubs, and cafés within walking distance of the hotels. The Canteen Bar and Grill at the Cavalry Court Hotel will have live music on the Friday night (July 8) before the meeting. So, come and meet up with your friends and colleagues before the meeting even starts. Also, make sure to bring your swim suits to enjoy the hotel pools along with a beverage of your choice after a day of talks. As a reminder, Early Meeting Registration ends May 31 and Hotel Reservations need to be made by June 1. Please do not wait to the last minute.

Lastly, I would like to extend a great thanks to the many people that have been hard at work to ensure a successful meeting. The volunteer efforts of ASP members are essential for the continued success of ASP and its annual meetings. Local Organizing Committee: Charles Criscione (Chair), Jessica Light, Kristin Herrmann, Tami Cook, Christina Anaya, and Guilherme Verocai; Scientific Program Officers: Judith Humphries and Mario Castillo; Meeting Planner: Don Duszynski; Secretary/Treasurer: Lee Couch; Student Representative: Kayleigh Chalkowski. I also acknowledge our various sponsors that provided substantial monetary and/or logistical support for the 2022 meeting: HOT Stimulus Grant from Visit College Station, Department of Biology (A&M), College of Science (A&M), Department of Veterinary Pathobiology (A&M), Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology (A&M), and Department of Biological Sciences (Tarleton State University).

I look forward to seeing everyone in July!
